The most widely-recognised birthstone for June, alexandrite is named after Alexander II of Russia, as it was supposedly first discovered by miners in the Ural Mountains on his birthday. Prized for its colour-changing properties, it is also believed by some to have the symbolic power to free oneself from excessive self-discipline.

Acting as a birthstone for the month of August, peridot is a gemstone shrouded in mystery. Its name has no clear origin – some sources suggest it is a derivative of the Latin paederot, which refers to a variety of opal, whereas others claim that it comes from the Arabic faridat, meaning ‘gem’. Its recorded use dates back as far as 1500 BC, where its symbolic powers seemingly ranged from warding off nightmares and promoting bravery to subduing negative feelings of anger and guilt.

More recently, amethyst has been associated with pure, loving relationships and deep emotional bonds.

An October birthstone, opal is thought to be named simply after the Sanskrit upala, meaning ‘precious stone’ – its historical and symbolic associations, however, are far more complex. Dubbed the ‘Patron of Thieves’, this gemstone was once believed to enable the wearer to turn invisible, and medieval women prized them as they were said to prevent fair hair from losing its lustre. Now, though, the opal is more commonly seen more broadly as a stone of protection and love.
