    This handmade jewellery is inspired by my photograph of Craig Aderyn Pass, an untouched channel through a range of sloping mountains in North-West Wales’ scenic heartland, Gwynedd. Here, a solitary road snakes through a valley of verdant trees and expansive fields, enveloped on either side by the steep inclines of ancient, ice-carved mountains.

Its name has no clear origin – some sources suggest it is a derivative of the Latin paederot, which refers to a variety of opal, whereas others claim that it comes from the Arabic faridat, meaning ‘gem’. Its recorded use dates back as far as 1500 BC, where its symbolic powers seemingly ranged from warding off nightmares and promoting bravery to subduing negative feelings of anger and guilt.

    An October birthstone, tourmaline is named after the Sinhalese turmali, which refers broadly to all coloured crystals, indicative of the fact that this delightful gemstone was once widely mistaken for ruby. As reported by one 18th-century Dutch scientist, tourmaline is thought to help with sleep, as well as discernment of right from wrong and reality from illusion, according to traditions from ancient Africa and India.
