A birthstone for those born in November, citrine is characterised by its rich hues of gold and yellow, which have informed several symbolic associations throughout history. Its likeness to the rays of the sun have led to it being deemed energising, healing, and inspirational, whilst its similarity to the colour of golden coins and other such riches have lent it the moniker of ‘The Merchant’s Stone’. For this reason, it is said to bring wealth and prosperity.

An October birthstone, opal is thought to be named simply after the Sanskrit upala, meaning ‘precious stone’ – its historical and symbolic associations, however, are far more complex. Dubbed the ‘Patron of Thieves’, this gemstone was once believed to enable the wearer to turn invisible, and medieval women prized them as they were said to prevent fair hair from losing its lustre. Now, though, the opal is more commonly seen more broadly as a stone of protection and love.

A March birthstone, aquamarine is named after the calming blue-green hues of the ocean waters with which it shares its gorgeous colouring. Due to this tie with the seas, it has been thought by many to offer mystical protection to sailors and fishermen. Some ancient folklore strengthens this maritime association even further, going as far as to describe the gemstone as the treasure of mermaids!

One of June’s many birthstones, moonstone gets its name from the gorgeously unique appearance of its surface, the mesmerising light of which resembles that of the moon. The moon’s close associations with love, so famously explored by romantic poets such as Shelley, have led moonstone to likewise become a lover’s stone. Beyond this, the moon’s cyclical renewal has left moonstone with similar symbolism of renewal and rejuvenation.
