This handmade jewellery is inspired by my photograph of Lake Powell. Straddling the border between the US states of Utah and Arizona, this mesmerising reservoir snakes through stunning sedimentary cliffs, its deep blue tones – a mirror of the cloudless sky – juxtaposed against the warm pinks and oranges of the enveloping walls of rock.
A birthstone for the month of April first developed in the USSR in the 1970s, cubic zirconia is created from base substances found in extraterrestrial rock from both asteroids and the moon.
As with other opals, Ethiopian opal is a birthstone for October, said to brim with joyously positive emotion whilst also invoking the calmness and restraint required to balance such ardour.
One of November’s birthstones, topaz is thought to be named after the Sanskrit tapas, meaning ‘fire’. Hindu literature points to its functions as a lengthener of life and provider of wisdom.
35mm long (~1 1 /4 inches), these dazzling gemstone earrings will arrive packaged in a small gift box featuring the image of their inspiration on the inside of the lid. Combined with an organza bag, this results in a gorgeously-presented pair which makes the perfect gift.
