A May birthstone, emerald has been called the ‘Jewel of Kings’ due to its ties to historical royalty; it was popularised by the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Cleopatra, and has remained in fashion since.

A birthstone for July, ruby has long represented power and success; for 8th-century Arabic mystics, dreams of rubies foretold good fortune, whilst in ancient Burma they stood for life itself.

This handmade jewellery is inspired by my photograph of Orvieto, a city in the Italian province of Terni, Umbria. Built high atop a wall of volcanic rock, this hidden gem rises dramatically above a verdant paradise, the gorgeously ornate white façade of its medieval cathedral drawing visitors from afar to its romantic, cobbled streets.

30mm long (~1.2 inches), these dazzling gemstone earrings will arrive packaged in a small gift box featuring the image of their inspiration on the inside of the lid. Combined with an organza bag, this results in a gorgeously-presented pair which makes the perfect gift.
