Magnificent crafted 10mm x 7mm inverted pear drop-shaped Whitby Jet gemstones, complimented by beautiful faceted cut sparkling 5mm x 3mm oval Rare Blue Kyanite & two 1mm x 1mm round-shaped Rhodolite pink Garnet semi-precious gemstones. This unique jewellery is inspired by Whitby, North Yorkshire. Synonymous with Captain Cook and Dracula this coastal town has quirky narrow streets, russet roof tops, bustling harbour, overlooked by the majestic Gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey. This fascinating town holds special memories for me as I went to school there but more importantly it is the only place in the world to find Whitby Jet.

One of the birthstones for January, garnet – historically tied to friendship and faithfulness – has long been used for decoration, having been found amongst the relics of ancient Greece and Egypt.

Whitby Jet is very rare and very old; one hundred and fifty million years in fact. It is actually a fossilised monkey puzzle tree that with the movement of the earth’s crust became compressed with rock and sand to form seams in the cliffs around Whitby. Made famous by Queen Victoria semi-precious black Whitby Jet is truly inspirational.

Kyanite’s name arises from the Greek kyanos, meaning ‘deep blue’. A stunning, serene gemstone, it is said to bridge the gap between the heart and the mind.

These handmade gemstone earrings are 36mm long (~1 1/4 Inches) and come in a unique gift box with the image of their inspiration inside the lid of the box and in an organza gift bag, beautifully presented.

An October birthstone, opal was once dubbed the ‘Patron of Thieves’, believed to render its wearer invisible. Now, though, the opal is more commonly seen as a stone of love and protection.
