    This handmade jewellery is inspired by my photograph of Valle Crucis Abbey, a ruined 13th-century site of worship situated near Llangollen in Denbighshire. Boasting an elaborate doorway, intricately-carved windows, and several acres of surrounding grassland which now operate as a stunning caravan park, Valle Crucis Abbey offers a unique and engaging slice of Welsh history and architecture.
     
    One of the birthstones for January, garnet – historically tied to friendship and faithfulness – has long been used for decoration, having been found amongst the relics of ancient Greece and Egypt.
     
    Onyx has long been prized for its enigmatic allure; it was much favoured in ancient Greece, where it was believed to be the clipped fingernails of Aphrodite, goddess of beauty.
     
    An October birthstone, opal was once dubbed the ‘Patron of Thieves’, believed to render its wearer invisible. Now, though, the opal is more commonly seen as a stone of love and protection.
