A May birthstone, the emerald has been called the ‘Jewel of Kings’ due to its ties to historical royalty; it was popularised by the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Cleopatra and has remained in fashion since.

This handmade jewellery is inspired by my photograph of Llangollen’s ‘Town Falls’, a series of frothing white-water rapids which roar beneath a spectacular bridge, drawing kayakers from far and wide to this spot on the River Dee.

Like other opals, Ethiopian opal is a birthstone for October, said to brim with joyously positive emotion whilst also invoking the calmness and restraint required to balance such ardour.

One of November’s birthstones, topaz is thought to be named after the Sanskrit tapas, meaning ‘fire’. Hindu literature points to its functions as a lengthener of life and provider of wisdom.

Its carefully-maintained gardens are gorgeously reminiscent of the Italian Renaissance style, complete with elegantly-carved statues of classical gods and goddesses.
